Coup de coeur
Coup de coeur (Graphic Novels), by Ciaran
The eponymous Alison uses her artistic talent to escape the trap of a humdrum existence in small town provincial England by moving to London, only to find herself in another trap, when taken under the wing of an older, successful, male artist. Alison deals with some weighty themes, including suffocating patriarchy and the devastating 1980s AIDS epidemic, but it's tempered with subtle humour and completely absorbing. It's also such a beautifully crafted book, mixing narrative and drawing styles, with a wholly believable and engaging main character, full of hope and defiance and determination. A brilliant use of the graphic novel form to tell an ultimately inspiring story.
'Alison is a haunting book, complex and intimate. Lizzy Stewart has written and drawn the aches and confusions of love and growing up with immense skill' Posy SimmondsAlison is newly married, barely twenty and struggling to find her place in the world.A chance encounter with an older artist upturns her life and she forsakes convention and her working-class Dorset roots for the thrumming art scene of London in the late seventies. As the thrill of bohemian romance leads inevitably to disappointment, Alison begins to find her own path - through art, friendship and love.
