Ode to a Cemetery

Photographs and text combine to take the reader on a meditative journey through historic Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, built in 1838. It’s 468 acres encompass magnificent grounds, grand architecture and world class statuary. The book captures the spirit of this verdant, peaceful, history drenched pastoral cemetery. This personal exploration encompasses color and black & white photographs of the century old trees, wonderful vistas, and Victorian statuary in Green-Wood Cemetery. They capture the transience of life and the importance of nature to the human spirit. The book also includes and reproductions of unique artworks on handmade paper, inspired by the female Victorian statuary. Throughout the book, Cole Swensen’s poetic words reflect on the imagery, creating, a lyrical interplay between image and text.
