Staff Pick, Literature (by Anthony)
Yellowface explores the impact of stereotypes and the misrepresentation of Asians in the entertainment industry. As a Chinese reader, I have encountered and experienced these stereotypes firsthand. The book sheds light on these issues and provides a platform for discussing the importance of authentic representation, challenging harmful stereotypes, and promoting diversity. It talks about cultural appropriation, the preservation of cultural heritage and the complexities of cultural identity. Through the characters’ journeys, I reflected on my own experiences navigating my Chinese heritage and the influences of the modern world. It helped me with my own cultural identity and resonated with me deeply, encouraging me to appreciate and protect the richness of Chinese culture. It reinforces the importance of passing down traditions, languages, and customs to future generations!
