East of Eden
John Steinbeck

First UK edition. 20 x 13.5 cm, original green cloth. London, William Heinemann. 1952
An excellent copy, lacking the dust jacket, the spine is just a touch dulled.
Inscribed by the author, "For Pierre Vignial / with great pleasure / John Steinbeck". Steinbeck spent some time in Paris in the mid-50s, staying near the Champs Elysées. Already a famous author, though not yet a Nobel laureate, he was beseiged by inquisitive journalists and found it some relief when the French newspaper Le Figaro offered him a weekly column. This way, they wouldn't have to come knocking at his door to find out what was on his mind. He kept up the lively, light-hearted column called "One American in Paris" during his stay, and it was perhaps during this time that he dedicated this copy of East of Eden.
