The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
Charles Darwin

Sixth edition, eighteenth thousand. 19 x 13 cm, original green cloth. London, John Murray. 1876
The sixth edition includes a new chapter, written by Darwin to defend his theory against criticisms made by St. George Jackson Mivart in On the Genesis of Species (1871). Mivart questioned evolution's role in the forming of human intellect and the theory's ability to explain the early developmental stages of anatomical structures like the eye. Some small corrections, the last Darwin ever made to the book, were introduced in this, the 'Eighteenth Thousand' of the sixth edition.
A very good copy, some rubbing and small wear to head and tail of spine, bookplate to front pastedown with gluestain and associated damage to opposite page where the two had stuck together, some light foxing throughout.
